About Hapkido

Hapkido is the traditional Korean martial art of self-defence.

Hap-ki-do means: the way (do) of Co-ordinated (Hap) Power (Ki).

Hapkido technique specializes in the use of joint locking and pressure point techniques but many techniques are used in Hapkido such as: arrest/control/conduction techniques, punching, kicking, blocking, throwing, break-falling, floor-techniques, acrobatics, weapons techniques, forms and breathing techniques.

From the KMA website:

"Though rooted in traditional techniques and philosophy, Hap Ki Do has continually modernized as culture has changed over the years. The tendency of this martial art to change with the times ensures that it remains an effective means of self-defense to this day."

From the GHA website:

"To develop GHA's members physically, mentally and morally; to build an appreciation for life and to enhance its quality through continued education; to build confidence, teach and understand diversity. The goals set forth serve not only to develop students as future leaders, but also the community around them. The Global Hapkido Association stresses the importance of its core values, "Respect, Honor & Unity", through producing technically proficient martial artists who exemplify our core values and demonstrate the highest standards of global citizenship in the art of Hapkido."

It is important to note that the GHA places emphasis on the development of the self rather than the destruction of the enemy. this emphasis is vital to a martial art because it places emotional development above violence. Hapkido focusses on the practice of self defence techniques, all of which have underlying principles. We endeavour to learn these principles so that are techniques become so adaptable that they may be applied to confrontations that are not physical in nature. Training in martial technique then gives us both the ability to defend ourselves and becomes a vehicle for our personal growth.
